Celiac Disease - an Evolutionary Advantage?

This activity focuses on celiac disease, which is caused by an incorrect immune response against healthy cells and tissues in the small intestine. During the activity, students will become familiar with mutations that increase the risk of developing celiac disease and will understand the evolutionary advantage of individuals affected by the disease.

Does Our Diet Affect Our Genes

This activity deals with the dietary characteristics of different populations and the relationship between population diets and the human genome. The activity also includes information about genetic changes that lead to evolutionary adaptations in different populations and the impact of these changes on human nutrition.

Lactose Tolerance: the Story of a Trait

Lactose tolerance is a genetic trait that shows convergent evolution.  The gene that enables lactose tolerance is a product of a mutation which has occurred in the last 10,000 years.  In this unit you will be acquainted with innovative bioinformatic tools which are being used by researchers in the field of evolution.

In this activity, we will explore the definition of "species" and the concept of a "reproductive barrier." We will also examine a real-world research example that illustrates the concept of a reproductive barrier.
